A week in the life of a koi farmer (wc 27_5_24)

Lots to update you on...  It's one of the busiest times of the year, with farm operations at their peak flow and also, many shipments, harvests, sales events and lots of new imported koi to tell you about too.

Opening Times

As well as our online sales, we also have the shop that's open 2 days a week - basically, Saturday and Sunday every weekend from 10-5pm.  You can just turn up during those opening hours - no appointment needed.

Visit us for our very wide range of koi, all the pond essentials you'll need including koi food, treatments and key equipment like water pumps and air pumps.  You can also ask our advice on filtration design for new pond installations or upgrades.  Or any koi husbandry matter.

Open Day

The first thing to say, is about an Open Day.  Remember last year's inaugural open day ?  (This is from 2023 ->  https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/open-day-at-adam-byer-koi-farm-in-association-with-koi-roadshow-on-sunday-4th-june-2023?_pos=3&_sid=82dfe0db4&_ss=r ).  So much positive feedback from attendees that day, and requests for a repeat event in 2024.  We are absolutely on for that, and we had provisionally pencilled one in for this weekend, but never firmed it up.  I have mentioned the date to a few customers in passing, and mentioned a potential date on an old blog post - so we're clarifying here that we'd like to run an Open Day, with the fixed price auction like last year... but it will need to wait until later in the season, after we've finished the first 3 rounds of spawnings.  We'll keep you posted on that.

So, the news is... 2024 Open Day - Date To Be Confirmed.

Spawnings Update

We've completed round 1 spawnings and we are on track for average, good or great harvests across all the spawnings which will start in the second half of June.  The spawnings include:

- Doitsu Ochiba:  (this produces our wonderful top down / bottom up pattern types, plus our range of Doitsu Ochiba and Soragoi Aragoke types which are very sought after!  The same spawning that produced this harvest back in March: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/exclusive-sneak-peek-videos-of-new-season-tosai-being-released-online-tonight-at-8pm

- Doitsu Metallic Ochiba: This is our new Kase line and the pattern type we're aimng for is the traditional 'Autumn Leaves On Water' style.

- Goshiki (Kanno Female):  This is from the premium Kanno female we secured in Japan on our trip last February.  Her spawning is much better this year compared to last.  We are on course for an average harvest.  Growth of the fry has outstripped all the others, so that's a really good start!  The other bonus is that this year, we were able to spawn her with the male that Kanno san himself suggested we use.  The spawning was performed artificially, using milt from just that male.

- Goshiki (Ikarashi Ozumi Female):  More Goshiki, but from this alternative parent set, also purchased in Japan last February.  This is another female that didn't spawn at sansai last year, and now Yonsai, she came good this year!

- Kikisui: Very excited about these, because it's from one of the females we bought in Japan last February, from Marusaka.  Picked out with Marusaka san, and this was another sansai that didn't spawn last year but with that extra year of maturity, came good this year.  Really good volume of eggs and good fertilisation too. We're on for a large harvest of these.
