A week in the life of a koi farmer (wc 30_8)

The usual juggling of priorities this week, with more spawnings and also the round 3 harvests (Showa / Kohaku / Chagoi / Karashigoi / Asagi).  The weather remains surprisingly warm for this stage in the year which makes harvesting our fry ponds that much more pleasant.

We released Round 3 fry to the fry waiting list yesterday, and they were sold within 12 hours.  We will have a good count up in the next week or so and see whether we have additional volume to make available for sale.

It's also time for us to start preparing for nisai harvest which is very exciting.  For info on the nisai harvest, please see the blog here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/nisai-release-scheduled-for-10th-and-11th-september

Leaves falling into the ponds from surrounding trees is usually an October event.  We always try to harvest before the leaf fall as it makes the harvesting process more difficult.  We're seeing signs of autumn much earlier than in previous years perhaps due to such low levels of rain this summer, with plenty of leaf fall already.

At this late stage in the season, it's always a bit tricky to deliver a productive spawning.  We're running out of summer.  The males are mostly spent.  And, frankly, so are we!  We ran 3 spawnings, and 2 didnt work at all and the other looks pretty poor.  But, at least we have something rather than nothing from that one spawning and it's with a new Showa female which is particularly nice, so that should make it interesting if the summer lasts long enough for us to deliver the hatchlings to 6-8 week fry.

Other news; we're starting to clear down tosai stock from the sales room to help make way for the new nisai harvest koi to coming into the sales room.  So, keep an eye on our ebay page for 99p auctions.

And, also the website too.  We've taken down the remaining showa's and value tosai.  Many have changed so much that they need to be rephotographed and measured.  As time allows, we will also be listing more of our 2022 tosai stock onto the website, and you'll find them here:
