Kujaku — meaning “peacock” in Japanese — are a metallic variety prized for the combination of clean base colour, vivid pattern, and the elegant Matsuba effect on each scale. The Matsuba pattern develops from dark centres to the scales, creating a reticulated look resembling a pine cone that, when well-formed, gives the koi both depth and texture.

When choosing Kujaku tosai with an eye on future development, here’s what to look for:

• Clean Base: The platinum or white skin should be bright and blemish-free — a good sign it will stay luminous as the koi matures.

• Even Matsuba: While the matsuba may be subtle at tosai size, the scale alignment should already be regular, giving confidence it will sharpen with age.

• Strong Hi Placement: The red-orange (hi) patches should be well-positioned and not bleed into the white. Early, crisp separation often leads to better patterns later.

• Skin Lustre: Young Kujaku with strong metallic sheen (hikari) will usually keep that glow into adulthood.
