🎯 TONIGHT’S TOSAI HIGHLIGHTS
Ki Utsuri – The Black and Yellow Gem
Ki Utsuri are among the rarest patterned yellow koi you’ll see — a black-based koi with vivid mustard-yellow markings. These alternating black and yellow bands are part of the Utsurimono family’s signature style, but yellow this bold is truly special.
As tosai, these fish still have much of their pattern and colour development ahead of them. The sumi (black) will strengthen and shift over time, sometimes forming bold, inky stripes, other times softening into more diffused bands. That unpredictability is part of the variety’s magic. If you love the idea of watching a koi’s personality emerge with age, Ki Utsuri will not disappoint.

Kujaku – Young Peacock with a Bright Future
Kujaku — meaning “peacock” in Japanese — are a metallic variety prized for the combination of clean base colour, vivid pattern, and the elegant Matsuba effect on each scale. The Matsuba pattern develops from dark centres to the scales, creating a reticulated look resembling a pine cone that, when well-formed, gives the koi both depth and texture.
When choosing Kujaku tosai with an eye on future development, here’s what to look for:
-
Clean Base: The platinum or white skin should be bright and blemish-free — a good sign it will stay luminous as the koi matures.
-
Even Matsuba: While the matsuba may be subtle at tosai size, the scale alignment should already be regular, giving confidence it will sharpen with age.
-
Strong Hi Placement: The red-orange (hi) patches should be well-positioned and not bleed into the white. Early, crisp separation often leads to better patterns later.
-
Skin Lustre: Young Kujaku with strong metallic sheen (hikari) will usually keep that glow into adulthood.
Kujaku are a variety where maturity brings out the best — the Matsuba deepens, the hi sharpens, and the overall effect becomes increasingly striking. Picking a promising tosai now is the first step towards owning a real showpiece later.
