A Spectrum of Koi Varieties: This Week’s Koi Release

Is there a colour—or a particular variety—you’ve been looking for?

Last week, we concentrated on Kohaku and three different interpretations of its classic red-and-white pattern.

This week’s release will be very different.

We’re putting together a broad collection of koi spanning different colours, patterns, scale types and varieties—including one of our widest selections of butterfly koi for some time.

Our harvests began yesterday, and we’ll be sharing the first footage here today as the release begins to take shape.

The koi selected so far include a remarkably broad range of butterfly types, alongside single-colour koi extending across a wide spectrum of colours.

There are more ponds to harvest and many individual selections still to make, so we don’t yet know the complete line-up. Keep checking back as we update this blog with new harvest footage, preview bowls and the latest varieties selected for Friday night’s release.

A broad selection of butterfly koi

Butterfly koi currently form the largest part of this week’s developing release.

The harvest has produced a varied selection, with different colours, patterns and skin types represented. These aren’t being presented simply as one group of “butterfly koi”; within the selection are a number of distinct varieties for hobbyists looking for something particular.

We have also harvested this attractive bowl of Platinum Butterfly:

Their clean white appearance, metallic sheen and long flowing fins make Platinum Butterfly particularly striking additions to a pond.

Exploring the single-colour spectrum

The single-colour koi will be less numerous within the final release, but the range of colours represented is unusually broad.

Together, they provide a chance to look at how much variation exists even among koi whose appeal is built around one predominant colour—from bright metallic finishes to softer, more natural tones.

For some hobbyists, the search begins with a named variety. For others, it begins with a colour they feel their pond is missing. This week’s release is being assembled with both in mind.

The First Preview Bowls

The first five preview bowls are now ready, giving an early look at the breadth of koi being selected for Friday night’s release.

Butterfly koi feature prominently, alongside a broad mixture of colours, patterns and varieties. More preview bowls will be added as we continue working through the individual selections.
