Top 5 Goshiki – Japanese Nisai Koi Release (Friday 8pm)

Ahead of tonight’s 8pm release, we’ve picked out five Goshiki that really stood out during selection and photography.

This isn’t about finding the “best” fish — it’s about highlighting koi with something distinctive, whether that’s contrast, pattern balance, or how they’re likely to develop over time.

These are five that caught our eye — not because they’re identical, but because each offers something slightly different.

Goshiki - High Contrast

This Goshiki caught the eye with its deep, consistent beni, set over well-developed robing that creates a very desirable floating beni effect.

Goshiki - Ginrin

The ginrin over the darker ground gives this koi immediate presence. Add to that the volume and strong shoulder line, and it naturally stood out during cataloguing.

Goshiki - Tancho

This one stood out for its thick beni, balanced pattern placement, and the level of robing already developing across the body.

Goshiki - Beni

The beni on this Goshiki is notably thick — to the point it almost looks soft on camera. The sashi and kiwa are clean and well defined, and the robing is already coming through, with more to develop.

Goshiki - Kuchibeni

The small touch of beni on the lip gives this Goshiki a bit of extra character.

A couple that stood out from the wider group

Ginrin Kohaku - Koda - Amazing Beni

Selected at Koda on the recent Japan trip, this one stands out for its deep beni and the way the ginrin has developed. It really caught the eye during photography.

Yamatonishi - Koshiji - Tsubo Sumi

This Yamatonishiki stands out for the sumi starting cleanly on the shoulder, sitting on white ground and setting the pattern off well. The overall pattern is strong, with very good colour and lustre.
