Japanese Nisai Koi Release – Goshiki Preview (Friday 8pm)

We’ve started cataloguing koi that I selected during the Japanese autumn harvest, in Niigata. These are koi chosen for how they will develop, not just how they look today.
They will be released online this Friday at 8pm.
Keep an eye out for further blogs this week as we augment this week's release with even more koi that I selected on my recent Japan trip.
Starting with Goshiki – Odakan Selection
Amanda and I began the process this week with a group of Goshiki from Odakan.
Goshiki are a variety that can offer something quite different within a pond — combining the familiar Kohaku-style pattern with robing over the white which becomes darker ground that develops over time.
What stood out with this group was:
- Strong, clean beni sitting well on the body
- The robing on the white ground is developing very well
- Consistency across the batch in terms of overall quality
These are not “finished” fish — and that’s part of the appeal.
With Goshiki, much of the interest comes from how they develop:
- The non red areas darken
- The contrast increases
- The overall look becomes more defined with time
Prices
These sit at a higher price point than our tosai releases, reflecting the level of selection and the quality within this group.
You’ll see prices within the preview video titles — with most of this group sitting in the mid to upper £100s.
Preview Videos
We’ve filmed a selection of the Goshiki going into this week’s release.
You can view them below.
Update (Friday): We’ve added additional nisai to this week’s release — see the latest preview bowls below.
Friday Night Release – 8pm
All koi will go live on the website at:
at 8pm this Friday evening.
As always:
- Koi are sold on a first come, first served basis
- The new koi will be listed on the website at 8pm — it’s worth refreshing
- The most distinctive koi tend to be selected quickly
What’s Coming Next
We’re continuing to catalogue further nisai from the same Japan trip, along with other koi that will be included in this week’s release.
We’ll share more previews over the next couple of days.
If you’re looking to add something a little different to your pond this season, these Goshiki are well worth a closer look.
