BKF Nisai Harvest – New Koi Released Friday
New BKF-bred nisai will be released online at 8 pm this Friday, 18th September.
This week’s online release is a particularly exciting one for us, as we begin releasing newly harvested BKF nisai.
These koi were bred here at Byer Koi Farm last summer. They are now around 16 months old and approaching the end of their second summer with us—and we’ve been looking forward to seeing how they have developed.
The first harvest has revealed an impressive and varied group, including Beni Kikokuryu and a selection of our distinctive doitsu metallic koi. There is a broad range of patterns and styles, with some particularly strong examples amongst them.
What immediately stands out across this harvest is the metallic quality. The lustre runs through the skin, scales and fins, giving these koi a brightness which is difficult to capture fully in still photographs.
There is also plenty of variety within the group—from cleaner, more refined patterns through to heavily marked and more unusual examples.
Some of the koi are fully doitsu, while others display the more individual aragoke-style scaling which has become an important part of our breeding work. No two are quite the same.

The nisai harvest is an important point in the development of these koi. At around 16 months old, we can properly assess how the skin quality, metallic lustre, colour, scaling and body shape are developing—and begin to see which characteristics from the parent koi are coming through most strongly.
We’re very pleased with the quality and variety emerging from this harvest—and we’re looking forward to releasing the first selection on Friday evening.
