A Week in the Life of a Koi Farmer (WC 13_04_26)

This week has been focused on completing our tosai selections and moving fresh stock through into the koi shop.

At the same time, we’ve been freeing up our grow-on ponds, making space for the Ake Nisai — the koi we’ve chosen to take on to nisai — which are now in place and settling into their growing systems.

The Ake Nisai we released just under two weeks ago have been selling well. All of the single-colour “Blue Dragon” Aragoke tosai have now sold. At the time of writing, we still have 14 patterned Aragoke available from that batch, which you’ll find by sorting for Aragoke on the koi for sale web page.

That said, the two-week window we set is nearly up. On Friday evening, any remaining fish from this group will be removed from sale and moved back into one of our growing systems.

New small koi mix stock in the koi shop

Over the rest of this week, we’ll be bringing through a range of new small koi mixes from our BKF-bred stock — so if you enjoy the multi-buy side of things, it’s worth keeping an eye out.

Alongside that, we now have some of the best tosai from these spawnings available in the shop in our 6-8 inch and 8-10 inch tanks, including:

Karashigoi
From our new Yagenji female. One of the males used was an Oakly line chagoi, and the results have been very pleasing — a strong range of karashigoi in different tones, along with some very nice chagoi too. The best of these are now in the sales room.

Doitsu metallics
From our beni kikokuryu and doitsu kogane ochiba spawnings. If you’re visiting, there are some interesting Aragoke-type fish within these groups — worth taking the time to look closely.

Ki Utsuri
Tosai from our Marihiro female are now through as well.

Japanese Imports

We’ve also moved through the final batch of butterfly tosai from Yamasan into the koi shop.

Alongside those, you’ll now find:

  • More Shinoda hi utsuri
  • Doitsu and gin rin go sanke
  • A good range of Marujyu kohaku tosai — now also feeding into our Japanese small koi mixes

Altogether, it’s a pretty broad spread of varieties across the small koi mix tanks at the moment.

We’re open as normal this weekend — Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am–5pm each day.

And finally, below is a collection of short video clips showing some of the new stock.
