A week in the life of a koi farmer (wc 11_7)
Another very busy week here at Byer Koi Farm; life doesnt seem to have stopped for a moment since the Koi Diaries grow and show, which I've still not written up! The week after was the BKKS National koi show, also not fully written up. And, we've been flat out harvesting ponds, selecting and also spawning new pairings which are the round 3 spawnings.
Our Round 1 koi fry mix is now available, and we've put some volume available on the website here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/fry
News on the spawnings first. They have worked, and really well. The best hatches of the year since Opaline, and this is across MGS Showa, Asagi, and Karashigoi/Chagoi. The next fry pond is ready to receive, and within another week or so , the one after that will be too. Soon, we'll be spawning round 4!
More news. We've been moving koi around the growing on polytunnel today to make space for the new fry to start their journey in our growing facility. That gave us a chance to see some of the ake nisai close up, and the LMC Showa and also the Shiro Utsuri's are looking really good.
Here's a quick vid:
And, here's Amanda and our placement student Nerissa who helped seine net the pond:
Also moved today were the Kohaku's from last years very late spawning; but in the case of these koi, most have been moved to the sales room to be sold. here's a video of the Kohaku ; most have been moved to the sales room today:
Most of these Kohaku's are available from this weekend. We have also recently brought through another batch of a few hundred tosai into the sales room too; so there is plenty of choice and if you'd like to visit, just let us know and we'll book you in.
We are working well into the evenings at the moment and our extended mid summer evenings have provided us with some lovely lighting and sunsets. Here are a few pics from around the site:
And finally, a peak at a kohaku from the Rosie Kohaku harvest that caught my eye. The spawning looks above average in overall quality, which is obviously a huge relief and also bodes really well for our small koi mix and tosai offerings over the coming months.
