The two most common toxic pollutants that can damage your koi, or even kill your koi, are ammonia and nitrite. Losses due to high ammonia or nitrite are unfortunately too common. High ammonia and nitrite levels can be easily dealt with by a properly sized and maintained filter, and water changes. So knowing the level of ammonia and nitrite is important for understanding the immediate danger to your koi, and also to understand how well your filters are performing.
