"Just received 25, 2 to 3 inch koi from Adam , some of the best fish I've ever had. Arrived when they said and very very helpful. There knowledge is next to none. Will be having my fish from there from now. Again many thanks"
Colin Hallet
"Brilliant experience from start to finish. Had some queries regarding one the the mixes available on the site and Adam was incredibly helpful. Ordered some individual Koi and a small mix (which we had discussed). Amanda then double checked to confirm the delivery date.
6 fantastic fish arrived safe and well on the arranged date. They look amazing and I cannot wait to see them grow in my pond.
Look forward to seeing the new varieties in future, from the new breeding stock (amazing blog on the site btw). Will definitely be ordering again in the future and won't hesitate to recommend them to others."
Subhranil Banerjee
"I had pre-ordered few Kois from Adam Byer Koi Farm. I was amazed by the level of professionalism and customer service as I was sent an e-mail before few days of my order being ready for collection. I had the pleasure of meeting both Amanda and Adam Byer at their impressive Bovingdon Koi nursery. Such awesome people with so much care and love for what they do. I also received few incredible Koi- handling tips from Amanda. I bought their Koi food and by far they're the best as the kois just love it. Overall, an incredible customer journey and the Kois are top-class! Thank you so much and best wishes Amanda & Adam... Regards, Subhranil"
Tim Kinnersley
"Very happy with the 3-4 inch koi, they have settled in and are healthy, happy, active fish. Will definitely recommend"
Kevin Davis
"This was our first visit and we were lucky enough to have Adam and Amanda to ourselves. Amanda was very helpful and patient, selecting lots of potentials for us to view. Adam will be our go-to for anything koi, pond or filtration. 👍"
That's all for now, and please don't hesitate to contact us (https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/pages/contact-us)if there is anything we can help with.

Tonight, we're able to make an small start, as we got ahead over the winter with quarantining the first stocks and have Marudo and Shinoda tosai available now in the sales room... and we're releasing some selected examples from Marudo tonight online, most priced at £50 each, with a few at £75.
Future releases will become available for a wider range of budgets including Maruyama and Tamaura Kohaku's , and also we'll load some of the Shinoda Hi Utsuri onto the website soon. We will also be releasing older larger koi from our stocks too - more on that later this week.
For now, we hope you enjoy this initial step, and the online release of selected Marudo tosai with some great patterns and excellent grow on potential.
At 8pm tonight, you will find these new Japanese koi on the website here:

If you've not already read our key note strategy update, you can find it here (https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/expanding-our-offering-japanese-koi-arrive-adding-more-choice-and-enhancing-customer-experience-at-byer-koi-farm)
]]>Demand for our koi is on the rise, prompting us to invest in a significant expansion of Byer Koi Farm. This project reflects our unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of our offerings and ensuring an exceptional experience for our customers. The new brood stock we acquired last year was just the beginning; it was a strategic move in preparation for a large-scale infrastructure project aimed at providing significantly increased production space. With this expansion, our goal is not only to meet the growing demand for our koi but also to enhance our breeding programmes, offering more competition-grade Kohaku and an even wider range of premium-quality koi varieties to our customers.
We have been working on that project for almost 2 years, and it should have been completed by now. What we are experiencing is planning laws which are very thorough and important, but taking much longer to navigate through than we expected. Meaning we are not where we planned to be at this point in the businesses development.
This is really frustrating for us on a personal level, it's held up expanding our breeding programme particularly in Kohaku and also the other high priority varieties we offer; and also because Amanda and I have this vision of what we want to be offering our customers which is competition grade Kohaku's and a wide range of other koi varieties and sizes, all at premium quality. Our site just isn't large enough to be able to do all these things, and so we are adjusting our approach so we can get closer to our vision, much more quickly, but at our current facilities while we are waiting for the project to expand the farm to come to fruition.
We've taken the decision that during this transition phase, in addition to our breeding programmes, to start stocking Japanese Koi to fill the gaps in varieties we haven't produced this year, which will enable us to offer our customers the widest possible range. This is an exciting adventure for Amanda and I, as we can start to bring in high quality tosai and nisai from breeders we know and have visited; some of which are well known names - and others, first generation up and coming koi farmers like us, but in Japan and doing a fantastic job. And some we know that are second or third generation and operating at a high level but under the radar!
This strategic shift enables us to focus our breeding activity on just the varieties we currently have space for, maintaining high quality output, while we transition to new facilities.
One of the catalysts for this change is, the recent setbacks in our Kohaku spawnings last year; all failed. In addition, we lost Sharkey (our lead Kohaku female) just after I returned from Japan, and despite bringing in another Kohaku female to use - she spawned in quarantine, meaning the eggs were of no use that year. That leaves us with no kohaku tosai to sell this year. We are very excited to have purchased some quality Kohaku tosai from Marudo, who does Kohaku very well. We've simultaneously addressed the gap in our offering with Sanke from Marudo and Hi Utsuri from Shinoda.
Customer service is very important to us, and this goes further that the way we interface with our customers, it is also rooted in the quality and health of our koi. Please rest assured the Japanese Koi we sell undergo a thorough quarantine process; bringing them to the same level of health quality as our own koi. The quarantine process takes at least 6 weeks and can be up to 8 weeks. Only healthy koi that have passed our process are released for sale.
Our initial range of Japanese Koi are available in the sales room right now, and we will start listing some online in this week's online release.
At Byer Koi Farm, we believe in offering fair pricing for all our koi, whether they're Japanese or our own. Our pricing structure ensures that everyone can find high-quality koi that fit their budget. We strive to provide a range of sizes and ages to cater to diverse preferences. Whether you're looking for top-tier koi for competitions or a more budget-friendly option. As we work towards that goal, we'll be bringing in more Japanese koi of a high standard throughout this season and beyond.
As part of the current strategy to pause the breeding of some varieties until we expand the farm we will be releasing some of the koi I picked when in Japan last February. Watch out for those and there are some stunning larger examples that will be made available.
Amanda and I want to thank all our customers for their support and custom.
That's a lot of new stuff to be sharing with you! Continuing to breed high quality koi, and the new Japanese koi offering too! Even more reasons to visit us this year, or order koi from us online here:

]]>This is in addition to the 3 bowls already previewed yesterday which you can see here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/online-release-friday-night-at-8pm-previews-of-the-first-3-bowls-with-more-to-follow
In tonight's bowls we present our range of very high quality Yamabuki tosai including jumbo tosai. We are releasing at all the price points to whatever your budget, we have an individual Yamabuki available for you at tosai!
The varieties in today's preview bowls is similar to yesterday and these are more options at a greater range of price points. We also have our first Goshiki being made available from the spawning of the very special Kanno female we bought in Japan last February.
Go sanke wise, we are presenting some lovely nisai Showa and Kohaku for you in tonight's release. As you know, Sanke is a variety we have not yet bred and Kohaku we are well known for and have some super nisai for you in this release and also already available online. But Kohaku tosai are thin on the ground as our spawning in 2023 didn't work out. So... that's a tricky position for us to be in... to have no Kohaku tosai to offer you, and the continued situation with no Sanke to offer either despite regular asks from customers ... and therefore we are losing the opportunity to supply our customers! We cannot afford as a business to be losing opportunities to supply our customers. So we've been doing some work behind the scenes and will in fact be able to offer you Sanke and Kohaku tosai... in next week's release. More on that later.
Back to tonight's release, and the wonderful range we are making available for you!

With moving koi around the sales room this week we've also pulled out some more stand outs from 2022 spawnings that are yet to be listed.
We are presenting this week's online release in preview bowls by price, following the same process as the last few weeks.

We are carrying the largest amount of stock from the previous 2 year's worth of spawnings, that all need to be looked after very carefully. We also are preparing fry ponds for use, and taking the brood fish through the final stages before they will be spawning. There are many selections to be made as we choose which koi will be kept on the farm for a second summer... these become our 'ake nisai'. And, this week... as well as work on all the above things; we are also bringing all the small koi mix through to the sales room and sizing them. There's also a significant amount of tank and filter cleaning work (the kids have been warned, that we may need help !). My son Solomon helped with cleaning the breeding tanks last year, and he's raring to get going with the jet wash this year :-) And my daughter Joely has been working with me over the winter on a hobby breeding project indoors with Guppies. She's also going to be helping out much more this year on the spawnings, selections and general farm work. All 3 of our children will be working on our stands this year at the koi shows, and at our open day which is provisionally scheduled for Sunday 2nd June.
Quarantine on our new brood stock that we imported in January is now complete, and they're now in the general brood fish tanks. I'm really happy with how they are looking and these will bolster our Showa production and help us start with Sanke. We may get lucky and spawn one or two of the females this year, but next year is more likely.
The online koi releases have been going down well, and this is becoming a weekly routine! We will try and keep that up through the year, to bring you some exciting new stock each week. This week we plan to release on Friday evening, and the release will contain a wide range of varieties in our Value Tosai offerings (£35 and £50), with some at larger tosai sizes too.
The new small koi mix stock will be in sales room from this weekend! And, it will also become available online too.
Prices are by size, and can be viewed at the bottom of this page:

We are open both days on the weekend, and if you want to check whether we are open.. either drop us a line, or you can check on our google business listing here:
We're open by appointment any day too.
That's it for now. And, we hope to bring more footage as we progress through this week's busy work schedule.

What I can also say about the Ai Goromo spawning is that overall, the quality of the beni and shiroji across the spawning is really good. Each koi is unique of course, but certainly there are some examples in this release with very high quality beni.
We also have some Hikari Utsuri from the Kin Showa spawning, including Kin Showa, Gin Shiro and Kin Ki Utsuri.
There are 3 price points; 35, £50, and £75.
All the koi in the £50 and £75 releases are tosai. And in the £35 release we have a mix of tosai and nisai.

This full write up contains a significant amount of detail and will be of interest for anyone thinking of designing or building a koi pond.
The unique pond cover which can be raised and lowered with a re-purposed hydraulic car lift will catch most people’s attention.
And from the foundation to the finishing touches, every element of Alistair's pond reflects his commitment to sustainability, functionality, and beauty. Alistair spared no detail, opting for locally sourced materials where possible that harmonised with the look and feel of his Scottish surroundings.
Alistair's koi pond build is nothing short of remarkable. From being the longest-serving member of the Scottish Koi Club without a pond to call his own, he has now surely become the envy of many with his prize-winning aquatic masterpiece.
We are grateful that Alistair's quest for the perfect koi to fill his special pond led him to us. Alistair calls his collection of koi ‘the main attraction’. It’s been fascinating to watch Alistair make his selections, and name all the koi too. Many decisions being made by a family vote!
From the striking "Silver Fox" to the graceful "Angel," these koi have been carefully selected. There’s a whole section in Alistair's full write up just about the koi collection. Each koi is named, and with a description of the koi and it’s character!.
Here's an extract from Alistair's article where he describes each koi... relating back to the numbered picture above. I'll pick out a few of his descriptions to give you an idea:
3. "Phannie" a Kuhaku. He has beni, on almost half of his face making him look like the Phantom of the Opera
7. "Comet" a Kosui with his back like a comet's trail
8. "Ochi" a doitsu Ochiba. A new but bold fish gaining in confidence
For the full list of descriptions, please read Alistair's article via the links above.
Alistair's journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the fulfillment that comes from pursuing one's passion. For such a special pond to be filled with our koi is obviously a proud moment for us too.

]]>1) Our sales room will be open with the normal opening hours from this Saturday. That's Saturday 2nd March. For opening hours, please see our google business listing here:
2) Tosai release! We know many of you are keen to hear more on this, and we can now share some news.
We have 3 broad categories of tosai , which is koi bred on the farm last summer; Small koi mixes, value tosai and tosai.
The small koi mixes will be at ambient and available in the sales room in the next week or two. Pricing for these is shown here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/small-koi
Tosai sold as individual koi, are offered in two sizes/grades:
Value tosai, which are some of the best examples in 12cm-19cm size range; and
Tosai which are the best examples in 20cm and larger sizes...
The release schedule of these individual tosai koi will be staggered. Please note, this is different to how we've done it in the past - where we've collated all the spawnings from the previous year and released them on one day.
This year , we're doing it differently - mainly because 3 of our 11 winter grow on facilities have sprung a leak! That's brought forwards by a few weeks the moment we harvested and made our selections.
Tosai stock from those 3 systems is now in the sales room , at ambient temperatures, and will be available when we open our sales room at 09:30am from this Saturday, 2nd March.
The varieties in this release are from the following spawnings:
Doitsu Ochiba, including various Aragoke types
Yamabuki
Kin Showa, including various patterned scaled metallic types.
We realise this may be a little early in the season for some, so we will be making an online release of some of the most anticipated koi from this harvest... on the evening of Friday 1st March at 8pm. Follow this link to see the newest koi listings. The new koi are conveniently sorted at the top for ease of viewing:
https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/koi-for-sale?sort_by=created-descending
The online release will include most of the Aragoke types. And examples from the other varieties too. More will follow the week after, including our value tosai releases.
Then in subsequent weeks, there will be more value tosai individual koi released online and in the sales room.
And in early April, we'll release the Oakly Chagoi and Doitsu Metallics. We also have 1 system with Showa, more doitsu metallics, some goshiki, Benigoi, and a few others... and these will also be released in April.
Asagi and Mukashi Ogons will be released later, probably late April.
And, that's it!
In summary, releases over the next few days are:
- Online release this Friday evening at 8pm. That's Friday 1st March.
- Our sales room is open at 09:30am this Saturday, that's 2nd March. And will then be open for the season, 4 days a week.
]]>We'd love to hear what varieties you are most looking forward to us spawning this year, and you never know, if we get lots of votes for a variety you're interested in we may bump it up the priority list and give that variety more pond space!
To have your say, follow this link and put a tick by each variety you're most interested in us breeding:
https://forms.gle/2zeQBTRPkCAfcskL6
It just takes a moment to complete, and your feedback could influence our breeding programme this year.
]]>This week, we're excited to announce another fresh batch of koi uploaded to the website, featuring more of our popular varieties such as Doitsu Ochiba, Kohaku, and Showa. Keep an eye out for the impressive Oakly Soragoi, destined to be a big grower! Additionally, we're introducing some of the first tosai of the new season.
On the tosai; we've brought forwards tosai harvests of several spawnings that have spent the winter growing on period in tanks... that have started leaking! The leaks have worsened recently , and so we've cut their growing period a few weeks short and proceeded with the harvest. That's kept us very busy this last week!
The tosai for sale from those spawnings are now at ambient and in the sales room, ready to be organised into priced tanks and made available for sale.
I'll blog separately about that because it also means we will need to change the way we release tosai this year compared to previous years. It will be staggered rather than all in one go. And there's a wide range of koi varieties to talk about, and explain the release schedule.
We have good numbers from the largest 'leaky tanks' harvest, which was Yamabuki Ogon's. So we've included a few of those koi in our online release this week!
We hope you enjoy this week's release. And... as we near the start of spring, any of these koi can be collected or shipped in early March. Alternatively, if you see a koi you want but are not ready to take it, we're still offering our hold until spring option too.

Opaline is our very special Mukashi Ogon female from the master of Mukashi, Marusei. We purchased her at 94cm, and she was 96cm at the last measure up around 2 years ago. She's probably pushing the 1m mark now.
We have a really good batch of new tosai to bring through for you probably mid to late spring from the same line. Today though we can present some nisai, spawned in 2022.
Mukashi's from our Opaline line started winning awards at koi shows in 2023, and we're expecting more success in the next few years as koi from our Opaline spawnings penetrate further into UK koi ponds and koi shows.

We hit more targets than we missed, and overall it was a successful year with our efforts setting us up for another year of growth in 2024.
We're already preparing behind the scenes for 2024 and have a customer focussed calendar of events to share with you. But before we do that, I wanted to reflect and look back on the highlights and successes last year.
Japan buying trip
This was one of our big investments last year, travelling to Japan on a koi buying trip to bring in enough brood stock in non go sanke varities so we can offer a more diverse range of varieties which is what most of our customers are looking for. This development addresses our customer's asks, which they presented to us in the 'Have your say' questionnaire at the end of 2022.
The trip was a huge success, and many of the koi brought back delivered us fry in the first year of trying. You can read about the new varieties purchased, here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/new-range-of-koi-varieties-expanding-our-breeding-stock
A bonus from the trip were connections made with several Japanese koi farmers. And some chance encounters with other people who share a passion for koi, from the UK trade and the global koi kichi.
Go sanke remain our top focus, and even though the 2023 trip was non go sanke focussed, we are still investing and focussing heavily on Kohaku and Showa and have recently brought in some new brood fish on those varieties this winter from Torazo and Sekiguchi, and Sanke's also from Torazo.

Variety Breakthrough’s & Production
Beni Kikokuryu and other Doitsu metallics
We've been breeding Beni Kikokuryu for a few years and have produced some really good ones but not in sufficient quantity to make them commercially viable for the farm. It's a variety I'm particularly interested in , the original spark for that was during my trip to Japan in 2015 when I spotted a couple of large Beni Kikokuryi at the Nagaoka koi show - and at that time , I had no idea about that variety ; but these few koi caught my eye and I couldn't stop looking at them! You can see those koi in some of the pictures I took at the show, which you can see on my write up of day 4 of that trip, here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/japan-day-4-part-1-the-nagaoka-koi-show?_pos=7&_sid=b52fde005&_ss=r
So this year, with the additional brood stock purchased, and several combinations tested in year, we have finally made what we believe to be a significant step forwards in Beni Kikokuryu production. And you'll see the output from that in our tosai offerings spring 2024. This is based on 2 pairings that have worked well, and this year, we plan to expand on those pairings to increase production of Beni Kikokuryu.
Showing the range of doitsu metallics, at a very young tosai stage.
A close up on some stand out examples of our doitsu metallics range. These are young tosai, and several months before release. Beni Kikokuryu, Kikisui, Yamatonishki.
Mukashi Ogons
We have a large and very special Marusei female, last measured at 96cm a couple of year ago and she may be 1m or even larger now... we need a measure up! She's stunning, and we've named her Opaline. But, the first year with her, the eggs were not fertile ! . Then the second year, we had a good spawning volume wise, and the Mukashi Ogons from that spawning are turning out to be the best we've ever produced. They were released at tosai in spring 2023, and nisai in autumn 2023.
Tosai Mukashi Ogons, Opaline line.
One customer, Kyle Weaver, bought Opaline fry from us, grew them on and took his best one to the BKKS National Koi Show and took 1st in size 2 Hikari Muji with it! A really great koi keeping result, and obviously, we're over the moon with the genetics we provided in that batch of fry!
If you want to try our Opaline line Mukashi's yourself, there are lots of opportunities to do so this year... whether it be Nisai , or if you prefer taking small koi mix or tosai... keep an eye on new about our 2023 Opaline spawning which is due for release late spring 2024.
Yamabuki
We acquired a 93cm Izumiya Yamabuki of outstanding quality a couple of years ago and it's taken that length of time for us to be able to get a spawning from her. Finally she delivered in summer 2023, and fertilisation was pretty good... and we have a great batch coming through to tosai this spring. These are at the same level as our Mukashi Ogons, and are not to be missed!
Doitsu ochiba
This has been a project over the last few years and in autumn 2023 we harvested our largest batch of Doitsu Ochiba nisai. These are going down very well with our customers, who love the grey / brown colouration and the unique pattern types we are getting on our line.
You can filter the koi for sale page on any of the varieties, which is a really neat way to see our offerings! Here are the Doitsu Ochiba's we currently have for sale:
Production
One of our best years in terms of total numbers produced. We've been working behind the scenes to improve the yield in our ponds with some of that providing in year benefit.
Other highlights
Sales room, and new opening hours
We developed the dry goods side in our koi sales room offering products we use and believe in, including pond treatments, pumps and other filtration, and also other useful products for navigating your pond successfully through the season.
And we introduced public opening hours for the main season so customers can just pop in without an appointment on those days. We remain open by appointment any day of the year too.
Our new range of Evolution Aqua koi products.
Show successes
2023 was another year of continued success in the UK's koi show circuit, reaffirming our reputation for excellence in the industry. Notably, Kohaku and Asagi varieties stood out, impressively competing against the toughest of Japanese imports at competitive. Standout achievements included Tony Thompson's 3rd place with a nisai Kohaku at the All England Koi Show and Matt Savage's 2nd place with a nisai Asagi at the BKKS National Koi Show.
Here's Tony Thompson with his major win with an Adam Byer Koi Farm Kohaku at the All England Koi Show
Good job with that Asagi, Matthew!
Another Asagi success from Daniel Adams who won 1st place with an Asagi purchased from the farm as a small koi and grown to 63cm in 2 years, and also winning, further highlights the strength of our Asagi line. To top if off, this koi was recognised in the esteemed 'World Of Nishikigoi' volume 3.
Here's the 63cm nisai Asagi Daniel Adams grew on from a 4-5 pick from our small koi mix.
Our new Opaline Mukashi Ogon line, much loved by our customers , is also a new avenue of show success. Particularly notable was Kyle Weaver's win, taking Opaline Mukashi Ogon fry, growing them on and winning against tough opposition at the BKKS National Koi Show, showcasing both our breeding advancements and the quality of the genetics.
Additionally, Alan Reeves' continues to have success with a Byer Koi Farm Yamabuki, originally from the Clash of the Titans grow-on competition.

Tosai release and Nisai release
These are the two largest sales releases of the year, with the Tosai release in early spring and the Nisai release in late summer.
It's a great opportunity to get an early pick from new stock, and both events were well attended again last year.
Koi shows
We use the shows as a way to clear stock in advance of new harvests back at the farm and last year, we attended three koi shows including the two we are usually at which are the BKKS National Koi Show and also the All England Koi Show. And we also attended the Great British Koi Show in Newark too. Koi shows span across the summer, and these are a great time to see us if you want to take advantage of special show discounts and deals.
At the Great British Koi Show and the All England Koi Show's, as well as good deals on koi bred in the previous year.... we also presented new stock that was just a few months old! Expect us to do the same again this year.
The whole Byer family helping at our stand at the koi show!
Open day in June, with the fixed price auction
This was a new event on the calendar and held in association with the Koi Roadshow in 2023. Very well attended for an inaugural event, and we also received a lot of very positive customer feedback immediately after the event encouraging us to host a repeat event in 2024! Based on that feedback.... you can expect us to deliver!
Here's our original blog announcing the open day:
The fixed price auction showcased a diverse selection of koi, from ex-brood fish to hand-picked tosai and nisai. Attendees had the chance to explore each koi at their own pace during the viewing stage, with the big draw and the winners announced at 12:30 PM. A big thank you to those who secured their prized choices!
In addition to the fixed price auction, we also put on fantastic deals on koi and dry goods, including special bundles tailored for the event.
Club visits
Throughout the past year, we've welcomed numerous clubs and groups of friends to the farm, becoming a staple stop for many. Hosting koi communities is always enjoyable and helps to make the hobby so special for many enthusiasts, and we're chuffed to bits to play our part in supporting that camaraderie. Offering an outing to Adam Byer Koi Farm as part of their club's agenda gives koi keepers a chance to bond over their shared love for koi, having fun and swapping stories along the way.
Here's South Kent Koi Club, which were just one of the clubs to visit us in 2023.
Looking ahead to 2024
As you can see, last year was busy! And, we're planning for an equally busy year in 2024, with increased production and more events! Please keep an eye on our social media and also the blog for news on key dates.

Our koi have consistently proven their excellence by securing prestigious awards at various koi shows throughout the UK and over many years, and this trend continued successfully in 2023. Here, we proudly highlight some of the remarkable successes our koi achieved last year.
Kohaku and Asagi are two varieties we are already well known for, and these continue to win in koi shows ... and we're especially happy with those results considering they're up against such tough competition from Japan!
Reviewing some of the stand out placings from last year.... and starting with Kohaku, Tony Thompson took a nisai Kohaku from us and placed 3rd in Size 2 overall at the All England Koi Show last year... that's 3rd out of all the koi in size 2 irrespective of variety!
Matt Savage took a nisai Asagi from us in Autumn '22 and brought it on to win 2nd in size 4 Asagi/Shusui at the BKKS National Koi show in 2023
And Daniel Adams placed first in size 5 Asagi/Shusui at the All England Koi Show, with an Asagi he purchased from us as a 4-5 incher selected out of our small koi mixes. Grew that koi to 63cm in under 2 years and then went on to win that great award at the prestigious All England Koi Show. Daniel's Asagi was so striking, that it was picked out by Liam Bessel as one of his favourite picks from all the koi shows in the UK last year... featuring in his 'World Of Nishikigoi' volume 3.
Our Mukashi Ogon line is also now starting to win awards too, and prompted the title of this post.
It's worth a moment to track back and reflect on the parent fish we acquired to take our Mukashi line forwards; she's a massive and extremely high quality example from Marusei, the master of this variety and thought to have originally created the variety in Japan.
Previous blogs on the new Opaline Mukashi parent:
Opaline fry are very popular and Kyle Weaver's took a batch of these Mukashi fry from our Opaline line, grew them on and took the best to the BKKS National Koi show where he won first place!
This is a spectacular koi keeping achievement, and we're also happy of course as in doing that wonderful job Kyle has also neatly demonstrated the quality of the genetics we supply in our batches of koi fry!
If you're interested in our koi fry, they are available in the main breeding season and can be purchased from our website here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/fry
Also at the BKKS National Koi Show, Alan Reeves won another award with his Byer Koi Farm Yamabuki purchased as a small grow on from our Clash of the Titans grow on competition. This demonstrates really good koi keeping from Alan, to be able to continue to keep this koi in great condition. Alan's won several awards with the batch of little grow on's he purchased from that event!

Koi show successes are an important part of the development of our farm, and demonstrate the quality in the genetics of our breeding lines. They are continue to demonstrate koi carp bred here at Adam Byer Koi Farm off Japanese koi are genuine alternatives to imported koi from Japan. We are truly grateful for all the customers who take our koi, grow and develop them, and exhibit them at koi shows.

We've been breeding Showa since 2018, and sumi development is what I find most interesting.
We have a dozen showa at £65 each listed on the website which were photographed in August 2023, and almost all have seen significant sumi development through this winter - which is their second winter.
The beni has also thickened up too!
They're all looking fantastic, and if you'd like to review them.... here are some current pictures and video.
And you can cross reference back to the August '23 pictures by looking at them on our individual koi for sale page here : https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/koi-for-sale?filter.p.m.my_fields.variety=Showa)
(Koi purchased over the winter can be left at Byer Koi Farm until the spring at no extra charge, and then shipped or collected.)
Here's how they look right now... (Jan '24) :

Pictures:
The seasonal period has been time for us to take stock, and re focus again for this coming year. Still plenty going on too , mainly with all the spawnings going through another round of selection. We've shared much of that on our social media, and I'll bring some highlights to the blog too.
Over the next 2 months we are starting pre season checks and... a lot of cleaning of kit and equipment in preparation for spring spawnings, in advance of the next round of selections which are pencilled in for the end of February.
I'll talk more about all of those things on another blog. For now, I'd like to tell you about our new small koi mixes that we are storing in warm water and are available to buy now; and can either be shipped or collected now if you have a heated pond or grow on system. Or, order now to reserve stock and shipped in the spring.
Our selected 3-4 inch mix is looking particularly good! Lots of the doitsu metallics in there, including Beni Kikokuryu, Kikisui, Ochiba, Ai Goromo, Chagoi, Mukashi and a wide range of others in small numbers from patterned metallic spawnings, and doitsu non metallics too. You'll also find some of our so-called 'Minion fish' (first mentioned here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/autumn-koi-farm-update-final-harvests-premium-tosai-selections-and-more), which are basically two types. Some are Kin Bekko... ie, doitsu metallic orange with black markings over the back. And some are Beni kikokuryu, but no white ; so with the metallic orange base colour and then black longitudinal stripes like a kumonryu would have.
You can order from here: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/small-koi
Most of these koi are from spawnings off the new brood stock we imported last year, selected on my trip to Japan 11 months ago. It's very satisfying to seeing the broader range coming off that investment and we hope you enjoy them!
We have also listed 5-6 inch HQ Yamabuki. These are from our 93cm Izumiya Yamabuki female that is a knock out brood fish. It's taken 2 years before we managed to spawn her and the off spring are a very exciting prospect. They have great shine and, now we're into the best 0.5% of the spawning... the colour also are excellent, But it's the body shapes that excite me the most with their strong shoulder area supporting a tall and also broader development potential. What this means in practical terms, is that these koi are likely to develop into impactful koi that will stand out in any pond.
Here's a selection of the 5-6 inch Yamabuki's:

Here are some examples:
Our buying trip to Japan early in 2023 was a great success and helped us beef up our existing breeding lines and also add new varieties to our range. For a reminder of the trip, please see these blog posts:
New varieties: https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/blogs/blog/new-range-of-koi-varieties-expanding-our-breeding-stock )
We've been seeing some of the benefits from that trip in the autumn selections, with the new types of koi we've bred and also some very successful spawnings on doitsu metallic types which we've bred before but needed more in that area.
Here are some pictures from the last couple of months to give a flavour of our goings on.
Spawned off a new female from Marusaka, which produced a range of Yamato (Doitsu metallic sanke), and kikisui as well as some beni kikokuryu too (not in picture).
Spawned off one of our new females from Ikarashi on the trip to Japan earlier this year. We expect a good range of doitsu metallics to be available this spring.
HQ yamabuki at around 4 -5 inch long, off our 93cm world class Izumiya Yamabuki female. A great success!
We call these 'Minion Fish'. They are a rare output from one of our doitsu metallic spawnings.
Our Oakly line has delivered again! We have a great range of HQ chagoi coming through .

Delivery date options are; Wednesday 1st November, or Friday 3rd November. Choose the desired day when you check out.
Any Oakly fry not shipped during this period will be grown on here at Byer Koi Farm.
It's important to note that these are exclusive fry from the premium end of the spawning and are meant for hobbyists to enjoy. We will not be selling this level of fry in commercial quantities. Additionally, these hand-selected Oakly fry will be the only fry sold from the Oakly spawning this year, and will only be available through these special batches.
This is a unique opportunity to start with top-quality fry from our exceptional female parent koi, Oakly. While these fry are still very young and small, our hand-selection process ensures that you receive the best possible chance for success. Please expect these fry to be approximately an inch long.
We will supply orders directly from our growing on systems, which are heated. So to be able to receive the fry, you will need to provide them with a heated tank.
For those that can take these fry, it's a wonderful opportunity to grow on HQ koi farm grade chagoi.
